Jags at Liverpool
At the first tournament of the 2003-4 season,
there was a good turn out from Jags. In the Men's Singles Abdul Wuraola, Clive
Carthy, Jerome Jonah, David Langer and Kevin Haste all qualified from their
groups.
David Langer had a very
good win in the groups beating one of Darlington's rising stars - Kevin Wilson.
Some tough draws in the
first round meant that only Jerome and Abdul survived.
Jerome pulling out a good performance to beat Daniel Horner - one of England's
top ten juniors last season.
This win set up a
mouth-watering clash between Abdul and Jerome. Eventually Abdul showed much
more consistency and came out on top.
A last 16, encounter with
Paul Drinkhall awaited Abdul and it went right to the wire, unfortunately a
couple of suspect backhands from Abdul
allowed Paul to take it 11-9 in the deciding end.
In the women's open and star singles, new South Bank signing Tong Fei Ming took
all the honours and did the double, not even dropping a game in either final.
In the banded events, good performances came from Chris Beckley reaching the
final of band 2.
In band 3, Rohan did well
to reach the quarter-finals before succumbing to Irish international Marcus
McDonnell.
David had a good win over
fellow Londoner Taiwo Adedayo in the first round before suffering the same fate
as Rohan did.
Kevin Haste played in band
5 and got some good wins on route to the quarter-finals before losing to
Wing-Yung Chan, the number 4 under 13 in England.
Overall a good start to the season, but there is definitely room for
improvement.
