JAGS 3 DT ETTELBRUCK 2
- Jags Sports
Club hosted our first European match of the season on Saturday 7th
of October 2000 against DT Ettelbruck of Luxembourg. After a disappointing
display by the England football team, Jags restored some pride to East
Dulwich, south London. With a mixture of true grit and determination Tom
Cutler, Clive Carty and Abdul Wuroala successfully unsettled the
opposition.
- Abdul
started the ball rolling, racing away to an 11-4 lead in the first game,
Jean-Marc Disou fought back bravely, Abdul with his dynamic forehand loops
and deceptive services won a close encounter 20- 17.
- Jags were
off to a flying start and Tom Cutler was ready to raise the temperature in
an already highly charged match. Although suffering from a head cold, Tom
managed to get off to a good start, however the ex-Luxembourg champion
(Stephane Disou) proved too hot to handle and went on to win a close
fought match two sets to one.
- The match
was finely poised at 1-1 and Clive Carthy “master of spin variation and
deception” was up next. Everyone were shaking from nervous tension, it was
now up to Clive to show what he could do under pressure. Finally Mihai
Grigoreanu was bamboozled by the clever serving and unorthodox execution
of Clive’s backhands, to win in straight sets 16, 13.
- Jags were
now 2-1 up. Abdul now had the opportunity to seal the victory, but
unfortunately went down –18, -11 to Stephan Dijou.
- With the
match now leveled at 2-2, Tom Cutler produced a fine recovery performance.
With his excellent forehand counter topspin and backhand control, he
secured Jags first European triumph, wining –16, 14, 12.
